PNBTM High-Performance Reinforced Anion Conducting Membranes

PNBTM Membranes are robust, mechanically reinforced anion exchange membranes (AEM) manufactured with PFAS-free polynorbornene ion-conductive polymer. The mechanical reinforcement makes the membranes tough, easy-to-handle and suitable for pressurized systems. The ion-conducting portion of the PNBTM Membrane is a functionalized norbornene chemistry which is the highest anion conductivity, chemically and mechanically stable polymer made. The PNBTM-Rxx series Membrane has an ion exchange capacity of 3.5 meq/g and is lightly cross-linked to control water uptake. Custom PNBTM membranes (IEC <1.5 to >4.0) and higher or lower water uptake are available through Polymer Solutions Inc.

Handling

Use proper protective gloves while handling the membrane in a clean area. The membranes are shipped in a pH-neutral form (i.e., bromide anion).

Storage

The membrane is shipped dry with bromide counter-ion and can be stored for an unlimited amount of time as-received. Some color change may occur when the membrane is hydrated which does not affect its conductivity or performance. The bromide counter-ion can be exchanged for other anions, including hydroxide ions. The membrane can also be stored hydrated or wet. The membrane can be dried with halide, nitrate or (bi)carbonate counter-ion but not dried with hydroxide counter-ion due to the resulting extreme pH.

Pretreatment for Electrolysis or Fuel Cell Applications

PNB AEMs are provided hydrated and in bromide form. To exchange the bromide for hydroxide ions, soak the membrane in a 1.0 M KOH or NaOH solution for several hours. Rinse with DI water prior to use to remove any surface hydroxide salt. Note, carbon dioxide in the air may convert some of the hydroxide to (bi)carbonate, which can be reversed by soaking in hydroxide solution.
